Reusable checklist · Updated July 12, 2026
A safe area is a decision rule, not a magic rectangle.
Identify what must survive every crop and what may disappear without changing the message.
Define the essential subject
Decide the one thing a shopper must understand at thumbnail size: the silhouette, clasp, texture, label, title, or representative preview.
Protect the center
Keep the essential subject central. Outer margins can hold backgrounds or secondary props; never place critical text or product edges directly against the boundary.
Test three crop families
- Square: tests left and right loss.
- Landscape: tests top and bottom space.
- Near-square: tests tighter marketplace cards.
If the core subject remains clear in several crops, the image is more marketplace-ready.
Pre-upload checklist
- Subject centered with intentional margin.
- No essential information near outer edges.
- Several crops checked.
- Thumbnail readable at small size.
- Original preserved separately.
